Let’s Talk About the Skin

Your skin is a part of the Integumentary system: the body’s largest organ because it is the outer covering. The skin protects us against germs and bacteria. It also regulates the body temperature with the nerve cells. The skin is made of proteins, fats, and minerals. Also, the skin is made up of three layers: the epidermis, dermis, and hypodermics. Mainly your skin acts as a barrier between the organisms and the environment.

The epidermis is the surface layer, which is the protective barrier that is continually shedding and making new cells. Keratin is found mainly in hair and nails, it helps with skin rigidity. The epidermis receives blood from the dermis, this is where hair grows. Also, the place where oil and sweat are made. As you get older the dermis shrinks and collagen and elastin production decreases. Collagen is found in 75% of the skin. It helps with skin resilience it wards off wrinkles, and fine lines. Environmental factors and aging diminish your collagen production. Elastin gives structure and support while producing flexibility. The dermis has blood and lymph vessels and contains pain and touch receptors. The dermis receives blood from the hypodermics; subcutaneous tissue which protects your muscles and bones by acting as a shock absorber.
